About Me
Learn more about my journey as an author
Dino Bernal
I am an imaginative author dedicated to weaving tales where the vibrant magic of Filipino folklore meets contemporary fantasy. In my debut novel, Genesis (Makiling Guardian Book 1), I transport readers to a world of ancient spirits and human guardians battling an encroaching darkness in modern Manila. I continue this epic journey in the sequel, Banaag: The Fading Light (Makiling Guardian Book 2), where the stakes escalate as the guardians face the loss of their powers and the arrival of even more formidable mythical threats.
As a storyteller at heart, I craft narratives that explore the enduring power of friendship, camaraderie, and the journey of self-discovery amidst grand adventures. This series is a true family collaboration: my son, Dean, designs the covers that capture the soul of the series; my daughter, Jessica, serves as my sharp-eyed editor; and my wife, Margaret, provides invaluable feedback as my primary beta reader. When I'm not busy crafting fantastical realms, I enjoy spending time with my family and our beloved dogs, Ollie and Lucie, at our home in Michigan.
My Writing Journey
My writing journey is still in its infancy, but I am driven by a deep passion to create stories that resonate with readers by weaving together my experiences, my cultural heritage, and my love for mythological fiction. I strive to honor the rich traditions of the Philippines while creating engaging, modern adventures for a new generation of readers.
This mission began with my debut novel, Genesis, and has grown with the publication of my second book, Banaag: The Fading Light. For me, these books are more than just fiction; they are a family legacy. I am incredibly proud to work alongside my son, Dean, who illustrates the covers that capture the soul of the series, and my daughter, Jessica, who serves as my editor. My wife, Margaret, is my first reader and most trusted critic, ensuring the heart of the story remains true.
When I am not at my desk researching ancient lore or plotting the next challenge for the "Toga Terrors," I am likely spending time with my family or tending to our garden. Whether I am exploring the parks of Michigan or developing new ideas, my goal remains the same: to bridge the gap between ancient traditions and the modern world, one story at a time.
Personal Life
When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I'm also an avid reader and can often be found with a book in hand, exploring new ideas and perspectives.
Aside from my love of my native country, the Philippines, folklore and culture, I also enjoy traveling and exploring new places through my writing.
I'm also a huge fan of the Michigan native folklore and culture. I currently reside in the Western side of Michigan, where the natural beauty and vibrant literary community provide constant inspiration for my work.
